Eph 1:3-20
Intro: Comedy routine – Fellow’s response to the greeting, “Good Morning!” “What’s so good about?”
Paul is writing this letter from the prison of his own home. He is under house arrest because of his devotion to Christ. But he will not answer any greeting by saying, “What’s so good about it?
In fact, before he is too far into this letter he exclaims, “Let’s scream, yell, and stomp our feet because He has screamed, yelled, and stomped His feet in support of us by way of making us the target or receipient of everything He does.”
Eph1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Then he tells us a little about just how involved the Father is in our lives.
It is not just the Father’s actions, or the Son’s actions, but all three persons of the Godhead are involved.
The Work of the Father: 3-6 - Election
The Work of the Son: 7-12 - Redemption
The Work of the Spirit: 13-14 – Protection
Paul elaborates by saying, IN CHRIST
Verse3 Blessed
4 Chosen
5 Predestined, Adopted
6 Accepted
7 Redeemed, Forgiven
8-9 Enlightened
11 Given an Inheritance
13 Sealed
14 Assured
Since all of this is ours, Paul wants all of this to sink into our troubled lives, heartsick homes, damaged dreams – take stock of what God has done for you.
He tells the first readers of this letter that he prays for them with a special purpose. Because of this tremendous work that God has done, one more action must be accomplished, the task completed.
Verse 18 “Our Spiritual eyes must open, we must clear our eyes, we must focus our sight.”
For then we will see the accomplishment of what Paul desired for all believers. We will understand why Paul, despite all of the bad circumstances that surrounded him, would say, “What’s so good about it?”
Paul knew that when the eyes of the heart are opened we know three things.
I. What is the Hope of His Calling
Wonderful Future guaranteed by the Holy Spirit
II. What are the riches of His Inheritance
There is no poverty in Christ
III. What Unlimited Power is Ours
We are plugged in to the power of the Almighty God
